The Chinese Carved Ivory Puzzle Balls reference the interest in combing art and nature while designating curiosity in Chinese craftsmanship and imagery affecting a European market. Alumni love the items and regularly ask about the collection in Special Collections as they represent an aspect of the college they continue to love. To create the work, carvers would first have started with a solid piece of ivory that would be turned on a lathe to form a sphere-like structure. Most puzzle balls have approximately twenty layers; several pieces in the Gettysburg College collection have upwards to thirty layers.

This is a pattern for a crochet version of the traditional Amish Puzzle ball. The resulting ball comes apart into 3 segments or rings that have to be re-assembled to form the ball. The ball is perfect for little hands and inquisitive minds! It will make the perfect gift for any new baby or Mom! I have updated the pattern to reflect the fact that I now use worsted weight yarn to make these puzzle balls, instead of double knit light worsted weight. If you prefer to use double knit yarn and a 4 mm hook, the ball will be roughly 13 cm in diameter. If you use worsted weight yarn and a 4 mm hook, the ball will be about 15 cm in diameter.
